Cooks River House 2 - 2021, Hurlstone Park, NSW

Cooks River House occupies an elevated site overlooking the parklands and riverfront of the Cooks River in Hurlstone Park. Once a deteriorated Victorian dwelling, the project sought to restore the dignity of the original home while introducing a contemporary addition that fully engages with the landscape and expansive views beyond.

The design involved the restoration of the home’s original frontage, paired with a new two-storey rear addition containing the primary living spaces and two generous bedroom suites. The new work adopts a restrained architectural language — simple geometries, robust materials, and a limited external palette create a calm and composed form that sits quietly behind the restored home.

In contrast, the interiors are rich, layered, and deeply personal. Developed through a close collaboration between client, architect, and master builder, the project was shaped by an exceptional level of care and craftsmanship. Vibrant handmade tiles, carefully selected finishes, and finely resolved details bring warmth and individuality to the spaces. The resulting home balances heritage and contemporary living with a quiet confidence, opening toward the landscaped garden and panoramic river views beyond.
